One of the beauties about the work I do is discovering new talent everyday, and non can be better than “The Wolf King” Von Intellekt, a young 23 year old hip hop artist who is (by my opinion) a ticking time bomb in the South African Hip Hop scene.
It has been a good month since the launch of DOT Made and our music category has been growing thanks to new talent that keeps coming our way. But the arrival of Von Intellekt on DOT Music has really got me excited. I am not a very big fan of hip hop but when it comes to the sound of Von, I couldn’t help but be pulled in by the poetry and intellect behind his music especially in his latest EP, “The Wolf King” which features my current favourite tracks “93 Til Forever (Prod. By J. Rawls)“ and “ Rock The Party“.
So who is Von Intelleck and whats his story? Well, firstly he is from Welkom, a town found in the Free State Province. He is currently studying at the North West University Vaal Triangle Campus and apart from putting words on paper, he is also does production of some of his music. I had the pleasure of briefly chatting to him and this is what transpired:
Tim: So what made you choose to be a hip hop artist?
Von: I did not choose Hip Hop, it chose me. It has always been a medium of expression for me. Writing poems (which later developed into raps) were the therapy sessions. Through other artists I have been inspired, excited, saddened and most importantly taught many life lessons. I do it because it’s the one true thing I REALLY love. Purely.
Tim: Amongst your previous singles is a song titled “Mama made me”, whats the story behind that song?
Von: Yeah. That’s the first official single from The Wolf King II: Throne Visions. Its a song about my struggles and refusal to give in. It basically sums up 2015, round about September to December. I went through deep pain and I was just always sad and shxt. But I just decided to pursue what I love and do what makes me happy. I was born a winner and that’s how my mama made me.
Tim: Another EP i came to enjoy is “A Dilla Dedication”. What inspired you to push that one out?
Von: The legend himself J Dilla. I’ve always wanted to do an ode to James. So in February, I saw a picture on Facebook I think, where it reminded me that it was Dilla month. I felt I had been too quiet in terms of putting out projects. Ever since The Wolf King I hadn’t dropped any other full length project. So I took the time and listened to a lot of stuff that he sampled from. I kept it there in terms of digging for samples. I enjoyed making it.
Though our conversation went on for longer, I came to understand that Von is highly driven by the message and meaning he carries behind his music (which is evident on songs like “Zuma Code _ Gupta Goals (Freestyle)“) where most hip hop hits these days are about bling, women, a nice time and money, Von keeps it real though he too has the amazing ability to light up any party with his live performances.
Von Intelleckt’s music is now available for streaming and download on DOT Made and he is the first artist to be signed under DOT Music at which his manager can not yet be disclosed but you will come to find out soon. From here on we are looking forward to producing more hits with our new found star and perhaps rock a few parties while we at it. What is still yet to come can only be a mystery to the inquisitive mind.
